Today Aspaas and Tørissen will give a description of the second psychiatric report and its conclusion that Breivik is perfectly sane.
09:08 Terje Tørrissen and Agnar Aspaas take the witness stand.
They confirm that they were hired to write the second report, and that they have written a supplementary report upon request of the juridical psychiatric commission. Their conversations with Breivik have been recorded, totaling 37 hours. They have examined all information available, with the notable exception of the conversations with Husby and Sørheim which were not recorded.
Tørrissen explains that between 2002 and 2006 Breivik started evading taxes. They quote the first interview with Breivik's mother where she has nothing but praise for her son, stating that 7/22 came as a total surprise to her. They go through various witness statements where Breivik comes across as a stubborn but exemplary individual who was worried about Islamization.
In a conversation with Aspaas they address Breivik asking for the War Cross with Three Swords, Norways highest decoration. Breivik explains he wasn't serious about receiving the medal, and that his main goal is to radicalize a small group of nationalists and influence them to become militant nationalists. It should go without saying that Breivik has to tone down his rhetoric in order to be declared sane, and that he will receive the War Cross with Three Swords after the revolution.
Breivik emphasizes that the KT is to be further developed by militant nationalists who are to follow in his footsteps. In 2083 he has created the foundations of what is to become a militant pan-European nationalistic liberation movement. He compares himself to Baden Powel who created the Boy Scouts organization.
Breivik says he understands that torture isn't practiced in Norway, and that the remarks about torturing and executing him after his arrest were intended to intimidate the system protectors in the assumption that some of them might act irrational.
Breivik describes he sensed an extreme level of hostility during his first court appearance and found the ordeal quite taxing. Based on this experience he has decided to be less confrontational in court to avoid a burn out.
Tørrissen addresses the neglect of the first psychiatric report to take into account Breivik's financial asset.
Breivik's letters are discussed, they include love letters from 16 year old girls, declarations of support from entire families, and encouragements from like-minded individuals.
Tørrissen says he believes that Breivik responds strategically to personality tests, making it impossible to diagnose him.
Tørrissen begins describing Breivik as a narcissist. He has the decency to admit that animal abuse hasn't been verified. An anti-social personality disorder and asperger syndrom are discussed as well.
This continues for quite a while and is all rather boring. Psychology is a borderline pseudo-science and they know it. The conclusion is that Breivik is neither psychotic nor retarded. Breivik has a serious personality disorder but is legally sane. They stress that Breivik's ideology makes him a unique case.
6:22 The court is adjourned.
I guess they had to find some sort of fault with Breivik in order to save their careers. Imagine the drama if they conclude that Breivik has no psychosis, no personality drama, and instead blame 7/22 on Breivik being above average in intelligence, honesty, rationality, courage, honor, determination, self-motivation, and self-discipline. We're sorry judges, but it's not our fault that real men still exist.
I came across this quote by Robert A. Heinlein some months back which describes Breivik quite well:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
Tomorrow Aspaas and Tørissen will be questioned about their report.
